Voorjaar-Winter- Voorjaar from M. Brito de Campos

Little Houses Quilt from Wendy's Quilts and More

I was flicking through Kaffe Fassett's "Kaleidoscope of Quilts" at my mum's house over Easter, and I saw the Little Boxes Quilt. I liked the way that the maker had chosen stripy fabrics for some of the houses, and I started thinking about what I could use to make something similar in a different colour way.  Here's the photo from the book:

Then I remembered the beautiful Kaffe wovens I'd bought from a guild member at our January sales day.

As soon as I returned to Wellington, I dug out the wovens and started adding some ...

My 3 quilt challenges for 2021 from Quilting with Claire

This blog is all bout my 3 quilt challenges for 2021 and why I’m doing them. Much to my surprise, I’ve never blogged about the quilt challenges I set for myself every new year! It’s a ritual that I’ve been doing for several years to push myself to become better at it! If you read … Continue reading "My 3 quilt challenges for 2021"

The Say Yes to Kaffe Collective winners from Wendy's Quilts and More

Free Spirit Fabrics have announced the winners of the Say Yes to Kaffe Collective online competition, and I'm thrilled to say that my Turkish Coffee quilt was one of the winning quilts.

The aim of the competition was for fans to make any quilt from Kaffe's Quilts in Burano book in their own choice of Kaffe Fassett Collective fabrics. Then the Kaffe Fassett Collective team chose their favourite quilts and the winners will receive some Kaffe fabrics from his upcoming 2021 release.

You can view all 10 winning quilts here on Free Spirit Fabric's Facebook page:

Happy memories from Wendy's Quilts and More

Yummy, yummy threads.

It's the last weekend in January, and Facebook reminded me that it's three years since I attended a Green Diamonds course with Kaffe Fassett and Brandon Mably.  I really enjoyed that day at Wellington Girls College, even though it was very hot!!

Kaffe commenting on my plan

I like to challenge myself when I go to courses, so I chose green and red as my colour palette.  You know I love green, but I don't often use red.

Last year I admitted that I was never going to make Green Diamonds. I'd cut ...

Turkish Coffee #sayyestokaffecollective from Wendy's Quilts and More

Each year I eagerly await the release of the next Kaffe Fassett book.  This year their book was photographed in Burano, Italy, and all of the quilts look gorgeous in the colourful seaside town.

My version of Turkish Coffee

As I flicked through the book I saw lots of pretty quilts in soft pastel colours, but the one that really grabbed my attention was the last one - Turkish Coffee, in rich, dark colours, designed by Liza Prior Lucy.  It was so different to anything I'd made to date, so I decided that Turkish Coffee would be my first quilt ...

Schermtijd! from M. Brito de Campos

Feathering the Nest 3.

Guy Fawkes Night from Wendy's Quilts and More

Last week was Halloween, this week it's Guy Fawkes.

Guy Fawkes was a much bigger deal than Halloween in New Zealand when I was growing up.  Most families bought their own fireworks and let off some sky rockets, Catherine wheels, flower pots, and double happys in the back yard.  Sparklers were just for little kids!

Then sales of fireworks to the public became restricted, and city councils started putting on large displays at public venues.  In Wellington they used to put a barge in the harbour and let off massive fireworks for about 15 minutes.  However, because it's ...

Kaffe Fassett Nine-Patch from TheEclecticAbuela

I know someone who loves lavender!

Kaffe Fassett Nine-Patch 98" x 98"

Kaffe Fassett Nine-Patch (detail)

Kaffe Fassett Nine-Patch (back and binding detail)

I combined lavender and purple with a Kaffe Fassett jelly roll (and a little extra from a KF layer cake) to make this quilt. Setting the blocks on point with sashings and cornerstones gives it a look different than the standard nine-patch.

I had never used a jelly roll (2.5" x WoF) before. I liked the variety of fabrics; the roll was cut accurately (without pinking!); and the fabric was excellent quality and very soft. That ...

Groet, Marina.

Finished: Courtyard Tiles quilt from One Million Stitches

I finished this quilt a couple of years ago and never posted it to the blog. It’s one of my favorites: the Courtyard Tiles pattern by Kelly Young at My Quilt Infatuation. I fell in love with it ever since I saw her version done with a hot pink camouflage fabric! Here’s my version, done ROYGBIV style:

Our staff photographer at work very graciously offered to take a photo of it in his studio – probably the best pic of one of my quilts ever! We used Command velcro strips to hold it to a screen that he raised ...

Nearly Completed EPP Monogram Block + Backing, Binding Fabrics Selected for Welcome Home, Baby Quilt from Cheeky Cognoscenti

You guys, as soon as this pandemic is over and the quilt shows start up again, I need to sign up for an in-person English Paper Piecing (EPP) class.  I am happy with how my EPP monogram block came out, but I'm pretty sure it should not have taken me this long to sew just the one block:

EPP Monogram Stitched and Trimmed

That's what I miss most about live-taught classes -- the individual feedback you get from the instructor looking at your work up close and saying things like "When your stitches get that small, you're not ...

Beetje lopende band werk. from M. Brito de Campos

  16 grote vierkanten gesneden
64 kleine vierkantjes gesneden
64 diagonaaltjes tekenen

Kaffe Fassett Shot Cotton Blouse & Skirt from Tea Rose Home

I must say that my most favorite material to sew is hands down, cotton. Maybe because I am a quilter too, and I am more familiar with the material; better than any other fabrics. Also, I wear cotton dresses like this daily even when I am just staying home. Some people might think I am over dressed and being funny, but to me, I feel comfortable in them and they are all washable! I found this dark navy and blue stripe shot cotton by Kaffe Fassett at a local store and immediately fell in love with it. I was going ...

Turkish Coffee quilt from Wendy's Quilts and More

This week I've been working on my Turkish Coffee quilt from Quilts in Burano by Kaffe Fassett.  And watching the US Open of course.  It's really weird with no spectators, but I'm getting used to it, and at least it's keeping everyone involved free from COVID.  The French Open (rescheduled to start on 21 September) is going to allow some spectators so that will be interesting.

There are so many lovely quilts in Quilts in Burano.  Free Spirit Fabrics are running a competition called "Say Yes to Kaffe Collective" and encouraging people to make quilts from ...

Octopus Tote from Wendy's Quilts and More

How cool is my new tote?

I just had to make a bag from the wonderful new Octopus fabric designed by Brandon Mably for Kaffe Fassett Collective.

I wanted the lining to be from Kaffe Fassett fabrics too, and I was considering using the two fat quarters of black and white Onion Rings that I've got in my stash.  But I've got other plans for them, so I bought Good Vibrations in black in white (on the left above).  But then I thought it might be hard to find "stuff" in the bottom of the bag, so I ...

New Kaffe fabrics from Wendy's Quilts and More

One of my local quilt shops, Busy Bee Quilt Shop, posted a photo of the new Kaffe Fassett Collective fabrics on their Instagram feed yesterday.

With a bit of uncertainty in the air here in New Zealand, I decided that I needed to race our there this morning and buy some.  Just in case.  These are the ones I bought from the new collection.

They hadn't even put the fabric onto bolts yet, but the lovely staff never mind cutting fabric for customers.

I also bought a few from previous collections because I like these ones too:

Versatile Summer Dress from Tea Rose Home

Over the last few month I have been going though my fabric shelves and closet and reorganizing them. I felt like my problem before the pandemic was that I buy fabrics faster than I could turn them into something, but I bet I am not the only one with this problem! I decided that I need to put a stop to that and actually start sewing more. I bought a couple fabrics you see in picture above and below about 3 years ago at a local quilt store but they were lost in a pile and forgotten. I was originally ...

Kaffe Fassett is in the House from Midget Gem Quilts

Have there been two moons in the sky? Nope. There was the most beautiful full moon at the beginning of this month, The Pink Moon I believe it was called by the indigenous American peoples. There was a definite pink glow around this one, it was a very pretty moon. I have a wee thing I do with the moon, I will tell you at the end. There weren't two moons in the sky, but I have two finishes very close together. I present to you, the finished Kaffe Fassett snowball quilt, formerly known in time of stress as ...
